There are creative exceptions but most often portrait photography is to make the subject look as flattering as possible. So that’s where we are going.
# Location.. Find the best one for your purpose. Consider elements like lighting, textures, colors and flexibility.
# Lighting is Key. Soft, diffused light will flatter your subject. On a sunny mid day, if the lighting is harsh, you can place your subjects back to the sun and then bounce the light onto your subject with a reflector.. looks amazing.. Go close..
The “golden hour” is a good time for portraits, Just keep in mind that the sun won’t wait and your time will be limited.
# Control Depth of Field. A wide aperture (low f-stop) to blur the background, isolating your subject and creating a pleasing separation between the foreground and the background. This will make your subject stand out and be what attracts the eye.
Speaking of eyes.. That’s where you most often want the focus to sit.
