It’s a weird year for the iPhone, and after taking well over 1000 photos and videos with I can confirm that gone are the days of huge spec bumps year over year. Instead, it’s on *you* to make these devices your own and feel like something different.

Here is Peta Pixel’s article explaining the trade offs of having more megapixels in the in the ultra-wide:

Personally if the camera button was a little bit lower and just had 3 functions (open the camera, shoot and zoom) it would be perfect. Even more for taking selfies with the main camera.

You voiced my experience with this "phone." I was sucked in by the hype. I desired to get the Pro as I had to buy the Max last year for the 5x zoom. That button sucks and breaks my nerdy heart as well. An instant fan, spot-on review, clear and real… Thanks

I've been waiting for this video because I can't decide whether to keep with the Pixel and upgrade from my 6 Pro to the 9 Pro, or switch to Apple with the iPhone Pro 16. The biggest appeal is the Pro Res Log on the iPhone

Great video Becca thank you, I get by with my iPhone 13 mini, its ok but not brilliant, but I regard it as my camera that just happens to also let me get calls & messages when I need to, I want to upgrade to a pro model some time in the future & will be happy to pay$1k+ but not until apple actually makes physical improvements to their camera lenses rather than relying! on computational tweeks & tricks, so I guess that will be around iPhone 20!

Great review! So many comments, so I may have missed this if you’ve answered this. Did you try turning off the camera button’s extra features and turning it just into a button, after doing this review, and if so, did it improve its usefulness for you?

The pixel has had that forever where you can adjust the microphone in the settings to get rid of background noise. They already had that

Your videos are such an inspiration. Like you, the new Camera Control button is a frustration point for me and I'm usually using the volume up button like I have in the past 99% of the time. Your shots are amazing, and thank you again for being such an inspiration.

I took my 16 Pro up to the Lake District in the UK last week and the camera button has been… frustrating. I got some amazing Aurora photos and some amazing pictures of the fells but, if it was at all wet or if I had gloves on, the camera button just got in the way, changing settings left right and centre. It’s in the silicone case so actually, if it had a cutout, maybe I wouldn’t have pressed it at random.

Hey Becca! Do you think this is the iPhones “touchbar” flop era in the MacBook. Cause idk it feels like it is for me. Something that we didn’t ask for and poorly executed. Honestly hope they remove it in the next iPhone cause this is not it. 😅

Great production! For the cameras though, if you really want beautiful video / photo, better get a dedicated camera, it's much more satisfying. The phone cameras reached a glass ceiling it seems. Video – it makes sense, for photo – no.

Incredible work Becca, loved this short & sweet review – as a 16pro user – 100% with you on the camera control. The Photos app aswell feels quite half baked – and un-apple like, really hope some big improvements are coming software wise down the line – and Apple watches your review + takes in some feedback!!
Wont be upgrading for a couple years until the lowlight significantly improves, the 4K120 + video & Basic photo capability is great for a while 🙂
Keep up the awesome videos!! ( especially love your edits being tight & refined – under 15/20mins ! )

9:20 good mic test. The Apple wired earbuds sound the best. Every test I've seen online for the iPhone Audio Mix feature has not sounded good. It's over-processed and sounds fake. Google Pixel phones are the same with their voice isolation software. It's hard to make audio sound real and authentic.

Great review! I'd love to see you do a deeper dive into photographic styles and what you use and when. For myself and what I shoot I would have to come up with one or two set styles I use for most things, since almost all my photos are taken fast when out and about. I don't have the time to adjust styles while taking photos or I will miss the moment.

Daylight photos look amazing, but then again, almost any smartphone can do that now (high end), but low-light is still a bit let down, I was expecting more from Apple this year. But then again, video is top-notch.

I bought a 16 Pro to replace my old base 13, and the results were, to say the least, underwhelming. BUT… Halide saves the day, especially with that garbage 5x telephoto. If you can deal with a RAW workflow on the iPhone 16, and embrace 'grain', and ignore that it isn't a 48MP camera (it's a 12MP, whatever Apple say) it is a decent camera, and an improvement over an iPhone 13, at least. But what's absolutely clear is that the physically limitations of tiny phone sensors were hit a number of years back, and post processing and AI are the only things that will improve going forward.
