Doesn't the reflector make the lighting look too flat? I can understand when the shadow is too dark, but in the first example where the model is holding it, the end result looks a bit as if she were lit with a flash. I prefer the contrast of dark and light with a shadow more on one side of the face and find it far more interesting. I would've thought the reflector would be to control how strong the shadow is, but I've also seen in a lot of photography books that they also almost eliminate the shadow altogether. As an artist I would always ensure shadows on one side of the face but it seems that many photographers seem to prefer the flat lighting look for portraits at least.

The first reflector photo looked much better without reflector. Much more contrast and depth to it. I think the reflector was too close , it looked too strong. The second reflector fabric cloth is really really good very natural ! Love it
