Honestly only watched because the model was black and has a natural hairstyle. Something most (non-poc)photographers on youtube avoid

So if I want less distortion, I ought to go for the 50mm rather than the 35mm? How bout the 85mm? Will that focal length completely eliminate distortion on the subject's face?

I've been torn between the 50mm and the 35mm focal length especially for portraits but for Sony cameras getting a 35mm would be the smart choice as the aps-c mode on Sony full frame cameras can turn the 35mm into essentially a 52mm lens. You do lose megapixels from 24 to 10 on a7iia7iii but for me that's not a big deal saving 1000dollars and having to carry another lens.
You show how one needs to compose differently for these different focal lengths. They are not really "interchangeable."

This video convinced me that I do not need 35mm at all.
35mm pictures suck, the knees and shoes of the model look almost bigger than her head, iphone-like pics, who need it out of fullframe.
50mm is the only lens you need, just choose the good one and learn to shoot.

I heard somewhere that with a 35mm lense, you're supposed to shoot portraits very perpendicular to the floor as the lense tends to distort (make things a LOT bigger that are closer to the lense). However, in 6:05 where you did those crouched down/angled upwards shots of the the model with her arms dangling downwards, everything seems pretty good and not a lot of distortion going on. Im confused.

Does shooting at 35mm with a 16-35mm lens for example give you the same look?
Can anybody tell me the difference for portraits? It seems like you can take the same portrait with a 35mm as you would with a 50mm only difference bring you take take a few more steps back….?

beginning of the video you missed a very important factor, what camera you’re using, especially full frame or crop censor because these focal lengths will NOT look the same with APSC
As for now I can only afford 50mm because in my country 35mm is more expnesive. I hope I can fully utilising 50 mm

and my personal favorite is actually the 35mm 1.4 (i also think personally that 50mm 1.2 is a bit overrated). 35mm also gives you more depth and context to the image which I really like. And yeah it's also great for portrait. Try to keep face (especially) and body in the middle of the frame, and dont photograph too close to the subject and you'll be fine with distortions that sometimes 35mm introduces. cheers!
