This is a “5 Min Portrait” using the Canon SL3 DSLR to capture a glass blower in action. I started off with the Kit Lens but soon after switched over to some better glass. The point of the video is to one review the SL3 and two, show you that a cheap camera can still capture “professional” photos.

Jared, love the on the fly walkthrough of how you work yourself through a shoot mentally, and vocally telling yourself what you need to do next. What camera strap are you using in this video?

I own this camera and I have been looking for this type of video since I got it. As a newbie, it can get demoralising when you can only find videos of professional photographers using high end modern mirrorless cameras like the Sony Alpha series or Canon's R series. Seeing a professional use my camera and getting beautiful shots like these serves as reassurance that I have a capable device and that all I need to focus on right now is getting better at my craft. When it comes to lenses, I agree with everything that was said here. I replaced my kit lens with the 50mm f1.8 STM within a month of using it. I've also been working to get the 70-200mm and it was so great seeing it on this camera body. Aside from taking superb pictures, it cranks up the camera's overall aesthetics. 👌🏿 Thank you so much for this Jared. You're inspiring many upcoming photographers all over the world. Much appreciated from Kenya 🇰🇪

Own a sl2 for a one year and half.
The kit lens and 50mm dose not make me a better photographer as this video does.
You really put effort into videos
Can't support you with buying t-shirt or using the link but I fully support the channel and the videos.

Hey there! New photographer here. Quick question.. You said the subject was over exposed so you increased your shutter speed. As a noob I would lower the iso if I thought the pic was too bright. What would adjusting the shutter speed do as I thought that only helps with motion blur? Thanks

Glad to know I’m not the only one wrestling with the focus on an SL3 😂 especially with a cheap lens in low light, I just give up and go manual T^T

Great video Jared!! For the EVF vs OVF you have a point here. EVF is better in situations like this in your video, with constantly changing light. But because I am using OVF for years I’ve got accustomed to the light meter behavior of my DSLR (800D) and I can have nearly perfect exposure 9 times out of 10. The most difficult situation with OVFs is in Manual mode where you can ruin the exposure if you are in hurry. In my opinion, in this session you should have tried Aperture Priority and Auto ISO, then you can adjust only your EV to nail the exposure. Forget the Manual ISO when in Aperture Priority in this camera because you can’t set minimum shutter speed!

Its trange how smoking weed at work or a business is ok but you cant do while driving.
It would be like people at work or a business drinking beer or liquor simply not allowed.
I suppose all his butts could be from after work right before he drives next to you on a public road.
As for the video fine job on teaching.

Kinda wish I got the SL3 instead of the M50. Might gonna look to trade if I get the chance.

Not that the M50 is bad, just think the Sl3 might tick more of my boxes.
