I am back with another 5 Minute Portrait and this time around my goal was to capture a YouTube Thumbnail for a fitness video with Maria.
Thumbnails on YouTube are very important and can be the difference between getting people to watch your video or not. But a lot of people tend to try and cheat their thumbnail by selecting it to be something that has nothing to do with the video itself.
In this case my goal was to capture a killer thumbnail for an ab workout video with Maria. Maria is looking to create A Fitness YouTube Channel so I helped out by filming a few videos for her. Since we already had her video shoot in the can it only made sense to take photos in the same situations for the thumbnail.
The photo shoot went pretty smoothly as you will see from the photos in the video and below. But I ran into a major issue when I attempted to import the files from the CF card to the computer. Somehow the card ended up getting corrupted and could not be read by any computer. I would think this was mostly my fault for putting the card in the card reader and removing it a bunch of times without ever actually exporting the photos. I exported the video before but not the photos. And yes if you are wondering I did eject the card before removing it from the card reader.
I was pretty bummed that I lost the files but I figured I would try and recover them like I have heard many people have done. I first attempted using the Pro recovery software from Sandisk and that was not able to recover anything. I than found a different one online which I purchased and it had success in pulling hundred of files.
It found all of the photos from Maria’s photo shoot along with hundreds of other photos going back months. Now it did not find any RAW images but it did find jpegs which is better than nothing. If this was a professional shooting I would not have been totally SOL. Sure the files that it recovered would not be good enough for much more than an 8×10 they were perfectly usable for online use.

Maria's great, but she reminds me why I don't work out…It's BORING! Natural movements are more engaging than floor work…Plus, I did more than my share of pushups in military school!
I think she'd be great if she was a bit more pushy..I like following "orders" from a gorgeous woman 😉

why did he use 640 ISO instead of 100 when there is ample amount of light? please explain i'm still understanding the techniques.
FYI…
even thought you shot RAW, the camera saves a small .jpg as a thumbnail (which is ironic because you were shooting pics for a good thumbnail pic). that is what you recovered.
How come you where able to recovery jpegs? I thought you only shoot in raw, or did you randomly decide to shoot raw+jpeg that day?

You went "full berserk" on those magentas on Post Process Jared! But still handled it like a pro in lightroom with only the jpgs. As usual, great work, great videos! 😉

Fro make more vids like this of you working with the client please. Another idea for a vid is what do photographers say to clients during the shoot. Please and thank you. PEACE
The reason the files were recovered in jpg is this is the default recovery format for many data recovery tools if they detect an image format from a deep recovery. You could probably just change the file extension…open in LR and see how many stops of range u have for each setting.
His vids are always way to contrasty. So much so the dynamic range is GONE. Stop your BOOMIFY.

This is a great example for the women out there as to why you might NOT want to hit the gym so hard. Maria was STUNNING in the previous 5 min portrait but here she's looking somewhat gaunt. Still beautiful but not as much as before. Of course, this is just one person's opinion.

If you're recording with the D7000… why is the autofous okay? My D7000 is slow with focusing while recording.
hey Jared thanks for sharing! I was wondering how did you stick the gopro on the D4? did you use any of the standard mounts/stickers or did you make u something?
Raw files contain a basic jpeg for previews and image review on the camera. Recovery software that doesn't know of the nef file format may recognize the jpeg image structure and give you the basic jpeg.

The pose at 6:21 looks perfect. I'm wondering if you ever shot tethered this would've been a perfect set up to tether to that huge TV you've got on the wall on top of the fireplace. The Nikon colors are so cold compared to the video colors. Also am wondering why you didn't blur the background more, and left so much detail behind her. Good photo shoot it's always good when you can do a shoot at home in socks.
I'm not sure if it's already been commented on yet, but the JPGs you found were most likely the previews built for the LCD on the camera, as processing a 30mb RAW file each time you click through would quickly drain the battery.

I don't see the link to Maria's channel in the description of the video… The links YouTubers always refer to as showing up in the video don't appear on mobile or Chromecast. Google should fix that, but it would also probably help Maria out to put the link in the description. I love the photography videos and enjoyed the full course on flash photography!
