50mm VS 85mm and Why I would in most cases

1) 85mm gives me this extra lovely depth of field that I love especially for portraits
2) It’s a little hack when you don’t have the nicest background- I know that I still get a good photo even when I don’t have the best location 🤝🏽😌☁️💨(Especially good during grey fall-winter weather)

The reason 85mm is better for human portraits is that SHOOTING DISTANCE not focal length controls how big a subjects nose is relative to ears or in an oblique view how big the far eye looks relative to the near one.
“As seen in the mirror” normal is about 8ft with any FL lens because people stand about 4’ away from a mirror and the optical path is 4’ x 2 = 8’ Move closer and the nose will start to look bigger than ‘normal’ from that perceptional baseline. Move back and the ears will start looking bigger than “normal” again relative to that perceptual baseline.
What changed the perception of what ‘normal’ perspective is was cameras with wide angle lenses being added to cell phones in the early 2000 and the users starting to take ‘arms-length’ selfies with them. As an example of now perception of normal has changed, in the early 2000 most cell photo users would use ‘selfie sticks’ to get the camera further away for more ‘normal’ near-far perspective. Nowadays arms-length is the norm.
That creates the interest phenomenon of people seeing a portrait taken from 8-11ft from the nose with an 85mm – 105mm lens on a FF camera and going, “WOW! that’s different!” because they are so conditioned to the new ‘arms length normal’ view of the face.
That observation is based on shooting portraits since 1969 based on advice in books which taught me distance not FL controls near-far size relationships. The reason wider angle lenses distort perspective is because they have shorter min. focal lengths.
Shoot from 10ft with any FL and then crop the photos the same size and the perspective will be the same, why a 24-105mm on a FF or 24-70mm on a crop sensor is a great portrait lens allowing crops from full length to H&S from the same distance with exactly the same facial rendering, not that anybody would notice that nowadays 😂
If I want full body person in frame with noticeable blurred background but still can tell where it is, what focal length and aperture I should get?
Ditch the music.
Sometimes I prefer the background to be a part of the portrait so I choose a 50mm.

Except that depth of field has nothing to do with the focal length of a lens, it’s a function of aperture size?
