…and yes, I used a ring light that makes my eyes look weird. This was one of my first YouTube videos and I didn't anticipate how angry this would make so many people. I'm still not sure why tbh.

Wonderful. I got over my hesitancy about taking pictures of people by first doing sports photography, then journalism. I would still much rather take pictures of people working, singing, dancing, acting, hammering and sawing.

5:25 YES!!! So many times, yes. I am not really big on “smile for the camera.” I am a documentary photographer and also do lifestyle portrait. Lifestyle doesn’t pose, but rather gives some slight direction, then allows them to dictate the rest.
4:00 Does a portrait need a person? I mean, by definition, yes it does. Though I get the point you are making about the inanimate giving context to the person. You are right on that.

Ive also learned people really hate the idea of having there picture taken without consent, i geuss its a violation of there mental/spiritual boundaries… but man i love looking back at old candid pictures of people I love or died so I can relive the memories or apprecite there development (like a picture of a 4 year old family member 20 years later)

The “rule” I see broken most often is not lighting the eyes. No catchlight=no portrait
