Hey everyone! During my Canon R6III review, I noticed that a review for this budget friendly 45mm f1.2 was highly requested, so here it is. I used this Canon RF 45mm f1.2 STM during a portrait photoshoot for both photography and video, I have lots of example photos straight out of camera so you can see the quality. This lens is super affordable, what do you think about it?

i received mine at release, but still no lens hood available and no lightroom corrections for the R5 😞
@JuliaTrotti Does it feel to you like lenses are getting so good that even many low end lenses would meet the needs of all but the most advanced or specialized photographers? That Canon is certainly good enough that most people would not know the difference…
I wish that Sony would ship an 85mm version of the 50 2.5 G. Maybe as a replacement for their ancient 85 1.8? Or a 135mm version. I dearly love my GM glass, but there are times when something extremely small and light is just much nicer to use!
Love the video! wonder how did you screen record without any cable? does the r6 mark iii does screen recording internally?
I just got mine a few days ago. Fun lens and will be a nice walk around lens. Also, the lens hood from my RF 85 f1.4 VCM fits.
A kind review, would rather say for the center/mids smthg like "fairly soft" than "mostly sharp", the corners are pure nightmare, total crap. But sure, for close up portraits like here it's enough, it has a look and it's affordable. It's going to be for sure a big sucess on a closed mount like the RF. Still think I would rather get an old EF 50 f/1.2L, it gets sharper stop down than this one and the mount is also more versatile.
I'll keep my Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art. Auto-focus speed is more important for me than 1/3 stop of light.
Lovely lens, absolutely the spiritual successor of the EF 50/1.4. I hope this one gets a better reputation.
You want to only spend money on L, RF professional lenses, costing $2,000 or $3,000 if not more per lens, but it's worth it since you want all your pictures to look beautiful at the highest level. Don't waste your money on a shitty lens like this one, which is not an L. RF lens, which will produce shitty results and you just waste money on a shit lens that produces shit.
I plan on picking this one up soon. One of my favorites is already the Samyang 45mm f/1.8 for my a7III so am used to that focal length.
would love to see a sharpness comparison between this and the RF 50mm f1.8
I wonder how it compares to the Canon EF 50mm 1.2?
Autofocus failing on a brand new R6 iii on a brand new lens on a relatively stationary subject (models), thank you for your honest review.
Considering the price, the lens is quite good. However, upon closer inspection, you'll notice that the bokeh has significant weaknesses at greater subject distances. For example, in full-body portraits, the bokeh quickly becomes harsh and jittery, especially towards the edges, where the subject isolation also diminishes. Chromatic aberration is also pronounced, and the sharpness is quite weak, particularly off-center (noticeable in full-body shots, where faces are very poorly resolved). Therefore, I see it more as a character lens with a vintage look, not as an all-rounder like the 50mm f/1.4L and f/1.2L. (I own the RF 50mm f/1.2L myself, which is in a completely different league, as one would expect at this price point.)
As a Sony user, I think the 1.2 for €499 is simply fantastic!
The Sony 50mm f/1.2 costs almost €1500.
I know there are differences in materials and one is faster than the other, but as a photographer, not a videographer, wen juckts

The original nifty 50 is the main competition. It’s here to stay. I have often wondered why no lens maker has made a 43.2mm normal lens, which is the theoretical “normal focal length” for full frame..Nikon did make a 43-86mm many moons ago.
How do you screen recording please? I need to figure this out. Don’t wanna invest in a monitor just yet.
20 years ago it would have been an OK lens. Underwhelming.
You want a 50mm lens. A 45mm lens is garbage.
Not really 3x better than 50mm 1.8. I will focus my money towards 85mm (currently not having one) – some new budget 100m f2 would be nice. To much background with 45mm and 50mm lenses. I am just tired of "environmental" portraits. I just much more like results out of old school 135mm at this point. Wide lenses had great run, but I am tired of too much background in photo – even blurred one. Thank for the review.

Whoa! i didn’t expect to be getting a review of the 45 1.2!! This is definitely a treat!
Is interesting. Many lens reviews mentions vignetting on lens but usually for the most part only professional photographers are always on the lookout for that. But for the normal mortal person or average family it does not seem to be a big deal which seem to be the majority of users. Of course as long as is well controlled and a good price. Just my opinion.🤷
This lens is such a fantastic value, it has me thinking of selling $29,000 of Sony Alpha products and switching fully into Canon RF mount. The only issue is when I realize that no Canon camera offers a tilt screen, and I refuse to cripple myself with a flappy screen that forces me to look off-axis at my subject. 😢
I love this lens. Use it on a couple older Canon mirrorless bodies (RP and R6 mark 1) and I definitely think it’s worth the money.
Viltrox 35mm f1.2 for Nikon next? 🙈
This lens is perfect for me, but I sold my Canon camera, which was my B-camera, and I'm only sticking with Sony now :/
