One of the most important lessons almost all portrait photographers learn is that shadows help to give the viewer a sense of depth and shape. This is true but only when the primary subject is of a brightness or tonality that easily allows for contrast between light and dark areas. For example, when photographing something or someone light in tonality, shadows are the contrast control tool you would want to use. However, when photographing something or someone of a dark tonality, it is the highlight details that help to illustrate the point of depth, shape, form and texture.

great session and im super late to discover this im late to the party! I do wonder why Tony set cloudy white balance is it due to those particular bowens light having a colour cast or because RAW shooting it doesnt matter as will be changed later in post?

Very clear, concise info. Lighting is lighting and it's timeless. I wonder if we should refer to Rembrandt as old school?! Great presenter – such a pleasant humble demeanor. There are other self proclaimed photog teachers I've run across (not here) on YouTube that I just can't bear listening to do to the egos and snarkiness they convey. When taking studio portrait with strobes, shouldn't the goal be to shoot with an F stop much wider as a F2.8? By lowering the intensity of the strobes. Or is this not important because you are creating depth using intensity of light? Therefore to reduce the depth of field is not as important.
