Both have their advantages, and both have their downsides, so being solely in one camp or the other isn’t a smart move. But knowing which type of light is right for a given situation is a skill you absolutely should understand.
In this live stream, photographer and content creator Gavin Hoey will share his thoughts on which type of light he prefers for three different looks. As you’ll discover, sometimes flash is the top choice, other times the simplicity of LED lights makes them the better option, and occasionally the light you choose makes no difference whatsoever.

As a photographer who has to keep his gig secret, all my lights are small and portable, albeit underpowered. I use mainly speedlights and recently got myself a LED tube light for my creative shots. Also have a few smaller LED units.
Could you do a group Holiday portrait show? How to light a group?

Very en'light'ening, Gavin. Thanks. I was half-watching and more concentrating on my early morning cup of coffee, but something really caught my attention. You took an LED lit portrait of Chloe and I was impressively shocked at how well the light falloff was at the background. I always assumed that would only be possible with the high horsepower of a strobe. Your presentation is causing me to rethink some of my strategies. There's going to be some trial and error here!

I have Godox flashes (mainly because of you) and some Rotolight LED lighting. Both give excellent results.
Unfortunately I live where I won’t be able to catch the live broadcast. I’m grateful for the ability to catch up later!
