In this video I try out the new Canon EOS R7 – one of Canon’s two new RF APS-C mount cameras. I wanted to put the camera to the test, using it for portrait photography with Canon’s full frame RF prime lenses. I also compare the image quality to the R6 with the same lenses, as well as take a look at the video quality against the R7 and C70.
*Update* – APSC crop is actually 1.6, not 1.5 like I mentioned in the video.

R7 pixel density would allow an 80 MPix FF sensor which is roughly twice the linear resolution of the R6, R6 ii so it is much more critical with lenses.
I use my R7 mainly with EF 100-400 ii and made some shots with the EF-S 60 – both lenses are highly corrected while the EF 100-400 ii was a nice surprise the EF-S 60 as an APS-C lens was designed for at least ~20MPix resolution hence prepared for 32 MPix with its 1.25 times higher linear resolution.
Thanks for comparing the low cost RF 35 1.8 – I havent seen flaws with it but I have to compare it by myself between APS-C and FF.
By the way the R6 ii has stunning per pixel quality which might be a heritage of the R6!
I hesitate betwin R7 an R6 mk2 for portraits and family photography (chidren, adults) because of new price of the R6 mk2 1799€ only. And with the new 45mm 1.2 at 499€ to start it would be a good deal i think. But would the R7 with the sigma 17-40mm f1.8 do as well for the same price (1299€+ 999€)?
Heey ! I'm thinking about taking the sigma 85 mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art with for my R7. What do you think ? Is it still an interesting lens even with a crop sensor ?
I'm an R6 II user and I've a few Canon L lenses but I picked up an R7 recently along with the Sigma Contemporary 30mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.4 to use as a smaller, lighter kit for doing photoshoots when travelling – I like to travel light! Very happy with the setup – both Sigma lenses are plenty sharp and render nicely at f/1.4. When editing I really haven't noticed any difference to images taken with my full frame kit. The R7 isn't a whole lot smaller than my R6 II but the Sigma lenses are a fraction of the size and weight of their full frame counterparts. When you did this review the R7 didn't really make sense for portrait shooters but now that these Sigma primes are available it most definitely does! The R7 does seem to be prone to shutter shock at slower shutter speeds though – I try to use first curtain electronic shutter at lower shutter speeds (<1/500) and fully mechanical to get smoother background blur at faster shutter speeds (>1/1000). This sounds a bit messy but it basically comes down to one setting for indoors and the other for outdoors.
James, base your experience between r7 and r8. I am new photographer, I have Canon eos r with Tamron SP 24-70mm f2.8 Di VC, Canon 100mm 2.8 L macro and Canon 70-200mm f4 L IS II. I do events, portraits and brand photography, but as hobbies sport like rugby, Hurley and Taekwondo this one mostly the time indoor, when I have time I try macro and birds. I am scare to buy the wrong one and in the end buy r7, have to sale my eso r to buy r8 😅😅😅. Please help me with 😊

I agree that R7 has flaws compared to R6 2.
For weddings and low light conditions R7 falters badly.
En realidad el problema es más complejo que solamente usar un objetivo idealmente fabricado para su sensor (35mm en RFS). La Canon R7 tiene un problema general que es bastante conocido, especialmente entre los fotógrafos de vida silvestre y es su falta de consistencia. Es demasiado suave y desde un inicio fue así, incluso con actualizaciones. Esto, por ejemplo, se ha abordado un par de veces en los canales de Jan Wegener o Duade Paton. Yo tengo la R10 y al menos para retrato me anda excelente con lentes RF FF, pero para vida salvaje, junto con el RF100-400 mis fotos salen un poco blandas. Saludos!!!!

Price wise there's quite a difference in the price of the two cameras as well as the lenses so I would expect I would expect there to be a difference for the price difference in the cameras and the lenses.
If I'm looking for a review, on a crop sensor Canon EOS mirrorless R7, then why are they comparing it to a Sony, Nikon or a R6 Mark II or R5. Or they'll start comparing it to the R8 but the raid only have one card slot in the i7 has two and it has stabilization built in the R7. I realize you get more with the full frame plus the cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2, 500 more
Yes I'm looking to upgrade to a mirrorless and I'm looking for one that will take good photos portraits landscape in architectural . I still have quite a few EFS & EF lenses and I will purchase a RF ADAPTER, HAS ANYONE USED THE SPEED LIGHT ON THE CAMERA WITH AN ADAPTER?

I have a new r7 and i tried to change and adjust all the parametres and the pictures are not sharp, in fact i can not determinate where the focus is if the smaller red focus point is not activated.
I am using an adapter with a 24-105 f4 L, i know people that are very happy with the sharpeness and other like me with this kind of issues…
Not sure where is the key but it is very strange when there are a lot of cases than me…
Not sure what to do…

I mean, if you know what you're doing 5D classic can take better images than R5 with 85mm 1.2 for example.
What you shoot and how you shoot it, lighting, composition, subject matter, that's what matters.
Sharp but bad photo is bad photo.
Less sharp with some CA, soft on the edges great photo is great photo.
Gear is for taking photos, a person is for making them.

After a year of using the R7 I can assure several things. I have used it with EF, EF-S, R and FD lenses. It was very frustrating at first. The photos came out blurry or shaky. Studying what could happen to my portraits I realized after experimenting that the mechanical shutter introduces shake. After shooting electronically…everything was clear. I also made sure that the Canon stabilizer does not cope very well with non-native lenses. I'm still waiting for a stabilized RF-S lens that is usable beyond F.8. The resolution of 32 megapixels puts all the modern optics I have tested in trouble. But…the good news is that all the FD lenses I've tried for stills and video give amazing results. Of course the R7 is a wild horse that you have to fight to get the most out of. Great video!
Try turning off the stabilization and any lens correction on the 35mm. I found it works better with everything switched off..
A 50mm lens, on a Canon APS-C camera, gives an equivalent angle of view of a 80mm (not 75) lens on a 35mm camera; Canon APS-C cameras have a 1.6 crop factor, not 1.5.

The R7 can be more demanding on lenses, but there are many factors that come into play when looking at shallow DOF lenses. But also, I find, that just pixel peeping is not actually accurate. Take the R7 Raw image and downsample it with a good algorithm to 24mpx and then process and sharpen it. If you now pixel peep between the two images for the FF and the CF you will have a different opinion.
Did you ever tried the R7 in a studio for portraits ? i sometimes use it instead of my R5 in the studio and the photos of the R7 are very sharp in combination with EF L lenses. 🍻
I suggest the R7 with a speedbooster and some F1.2 or 1.4 EF prime lenses.
Some sharp top quality full frame images with a crop sensor. Your soft images are because your looking through the center of a full frame lens, rather than using he whole lens ability. A speed booster will allow the APSc sensor to see the full lense and all it's glory.
Any update so far with the picture quality of 35mm on r7 after a year this video is created?
I would like to see what the sigma 56mm could do with this camera
Your images are soft with R7 because of the Mechanical shutter. If changed to electronic, it is excellent and sharp.
What a waste of gear, most of people know don't to use all aperture in lens, it's necessary to close a little in order to get the sweet point where there is true sharpness
