Nikon D5600 “5 Min Portrait”: How to Take Professional Pictures with Only Kit Lenses. Download the RAW files right here
The challenge for this “5 Min Portrait” / “Real World Review” was to use the Nikon D5600 and only the two kit lenses that are packaged with the camera (if you purchase the package). The two lenses are the Nikon 18-55 kit lens and the 70-300 kit lens which does not have VR.
The scene was Pam Cakes, a Philadelphia Cupcakery. There wasn’t a lot of space, not a lot of light in the back, but at the end of the day, the results speak for themselves.
Once again this video proves it’s the photographer not the camera. Yes the right tools help but if all you have are kit lenses, you can still get fantastic results.

In 2024 the Nikon D5600 is still a beautiful and great camera! I hate the mirrorless. D.
Oh no. That barrel distortion on the stainless steel table she’s putting cupcakes on. This camera corrects that, but only in JPEG. In RAW, that needs to be corrected in an editor.
Nikon does make that 70-300 lens in a VR version. It really is a must, for shooting by hand, and slowing down the shutter speed well enough to make up for the light loss at that tight aperture. Without the VR, you kinda need a tripod, which would suck for the space you’re trying to work in.

Good situational photography. Quick question, when shooting with background light, did you switch to spot metering?
When your nose touches the screen your changing the focus point on your camera. You can control your focus point with the touch screen, directional pad, the OK button will re- center your focus point in your view finder

First….sprinkles. With that out of the way, I wonder how using a flash would have affectred the look of many of those photos? Obviously some would not have looked as good (Such as the backlit photos) but I think many could look even better?
That 18-55mm af-p is so underrated

I'm increasingly a fan of yours. What app did you use to remotely shoot from the monopod? Pleas tell me it wasn't Snapbridge.
Worst thing about this video is that he didn't try any prime lenses with it.

Hi there Jared, I've probably watched this video about 3 times from start to finish to get some good composition ideas using this same gear although my 70-300 zoom has VR. I really liked the way you explained what you're doing and why, what to look out for, angles and lighting. Little obstacles are important…….like some newbie mistake (guilty) of shooting a friend's wedding and then later realising that my damn shadow was in the frame between me and the new Married couple….and unfortunately that was back in the film days when you had to make each photo count. Cheers for the excellent tuition Jared.
