What I find confusing about F stops, is some canon lenses like 35mm RF has tiny little glass but goes to F1.8, but then 50mm does the same basically but it is way wider glass.. so does that mean 50mm will let more light in a F1.8 than the 35mm?
David: So many of the photographers giving info/advice on YouTube talk about using large F-stops to create small depth-of-field. But they never mention that this often comes at a price due to less optical quality at large f-stops. My experience is that the first 2-3 f-stops and the last 2 f-stops on most lenses are considerably lower in optical quality than all the f-stop in between. So using i.e. F-stop 2 may give you a nice blurred background but you also loose sharpness in your main subject. I did a test on Canon and Nikon Macro 100/2,8 lenses. With macro lenses you very often shoot at very close distances where you would want f-stop 32 or even smaller to gain max depth-of-field but these f-stops are close to useless due to very poor optical quality – I had to go to around f-stop 18 to get super optical quality, and then at the cost of depth-of-field. Apparently it is not possible to get both……

Thank you for this, I will share with a new assistant. I just want to make something clear, and maybe you may consider this, as you know, apertures are in fractions. 1 over the aperture number: 1/1.4; 1/5.6, 1/22, etc. In other words, when we see 1.4 or 2.0 in the viewfinder, this is not a "smaller number" than 22, it is actually a larger number. But I know you know this, as many others. I always teach this in fractions when I first take on an assistant that is brand new. Same with shutter speeds – 1/60, 1/250, 1/500, etc. Again, thanks for the video.

I like photography and knowing those things is surely very useful, but what got me into photography on the first place was taking pictures of wild animals, and I realized that micromanaging those three things (ISO, Aperture and shutter speed) is very impractical when trying to take a picture of wild animal that will not wait you.
That's why I rather use the Av or Tv mode on my camera, so that I can have some control of the picture quickly, and the rest I let the camera do the job.
I’ve been trying to find a video that was so simple and easy to understand like this for a while now. This was exactly what I needed and the fact that you were able to sum it up in a 10 minute video was super helpful. Thank you🙏🏾
