Learn how to paint a portrait alla prima by focusing on structure first—mapping shadow shapes and separating light planes. Add complementary color notes early to avoid flat skin tones and build form through subtle temperature shifts. Finish with highlights and details on top of a strong foundation for a natural, three-dimensional look.

Omgggggg ❤️🔥
Actually, I think you've done a very nice job of separating the shadow planes. Bravo. However, I do not agree with your olive green background. Remembering that olive green has yellow in it and you are not using any purples it does not make the olive a very subtle background color. I too, could be wrong however I think a blue would have worked better. I am seeing Orange, oranges in your composition, thus the blue. Also, the tops of your cheeks were handled very in a lovely manner.
Great❤❤❤
Now you made me sentimental. I semibinged Vikings over the course of a year and I really miss it now.
Awesome painting. Mad skills, not unlike the character in the portrait perhaps!?

What did you mean by shifting the temperature? English isn't my native language, could you please help me understand?
I learned more in this short than a 15-30min video. Good work!
usually better not to use too much or any true blacks, use hints of blues like ultramarine or dark greens, GG
Thank you so much! This was very helpful 🙂
Gus ❤
It is really cool to see a skull looking shape at the start, really shows you how important values are in defining complex shapes!
Thank you for this YouTube SHORT
