I always talk about focusing on the eye when shooting portraits. In this video I explain why it’s important to focus on the eye, when should you focus on the eye and when it doesn’t make a difference.

Hey man you have taught me so so much about photography! i just wanted to tell you thanks and how much i appreciate it!
do you lock focus and then move the camera to re-frame the pic alot? i tend to do this and not sure if it is a bad habit or not…i will focus on my subject pressing halfway on button, once it focuses, i will move camera to include other areas to be included in my composition.
what about shooting a building or structure? anywhere on the structure right? or the top areas of the structure?
Absolutely LOVE YOUR VIDEOS 🙂 they are straight forward and very concise I have learnt more following your video than elsewhere including a paid for course . I am with flawlessclan in that I found it really hard to focus in your voice with the guitar going nuts in the background! Keep up the fantastic work but try to include some canon specifics if you can for us non Nikon ppl 🙂

thank you for this! i foudn your video by googling "how to focus on the eyes"!! what does it mean to "Focus" on the EYE??
I use a nikkon d5100, and by focus on the eye does it mean the red dot should be around the eye? (one of the red dots). or does it mean manually focus until its sharpest at the eye? (but it takes so much longer to manuaally focus than use the auto focus.
are the pictures in the video via auto focus or manual focus?

I broke my lens canon 50mm F/1.8 and I am happy as it was a sign from powers to be to get a better lens…but holy GOD good lenses are costly.
So I am on the fence for Rokinon 35mm F/1.4, I went over it in great details as you suggested. I would love to hear from you before I make a plunge.
Other question is can I use AEB in Av mode with this lens

when you are looking at your subject, you will see a main focal point show up on your camera. Try and get that focal point on the subjects eye. There are other video's that he post telling you about your focal points and how to adjust them.

i need your opinion..im planning to buy a walk around lens, but i would rather go to the third party lens and what would you recommend me? the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 or the Tokina 28-70mm f2.8? i just checked the new Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 but i was surpriced with their pricing, my Camera is D90 and D300s..thank you!

quick question.. what about canon dslr's.. they have a limited focal points.. and not that adjustable unlike nikon. i just want to know, how to compensate this.. without sacrificing my framing..
