I recently released a video regarding portrait photography using a Nikon D7000 and fixed 50mm f/1.8. The wide open aperture allows for a nice blurred background which is great for portraits.
After the release, I received a handful of questions regarding entry level DSLRs and kit lenses. Since most people do not have a fixed 35 or fixed 50, they wanted to know if the kit lens would perform the same.
I ventured out to take portraits using an entry level DSLR and standard 18-55 kit lens with a Nikon D3400. Regardless of your camera and lens (be it Canon T6i, T5i, Nikon D3300, D3200, or perhaps the Sony a6000), you can take some great portraits using various techniques in my opinion.
Nikon:
Fixed 50mm w/ auto focus:
Fixed 50mm w/o auto focus:
Fixed 35mm w/ auto focus:
Nikon D3400 w/ 18-55 kit lens:
You will save a bit with the fixed 35mm (auto focus) over the fixed 50mm if you choose to go that route.

I think I’ve watch this episode multitude of times. Great model great lighting, love using the kit lens 18-55. The music is just right. Can’t wait until restrictions are lifted with this virus here in the UK and get out there and shoot some photos.

Hell yah, I’m in Indiana starting up a photography buisness and I’m looking into cameras for back up and budget set ups for new hires that can handle low end and basic photography senior photos ect
This video is old I know but maybe someone can help — using the kit lens which focal length did you choose? Just switch between 35 and 50-55mm?

Is nice you helped people understand how to get blurry backgrounds. Also I would like to express that I found your edition not a good example due to the 'radial filter" effect that cause an halo around the girl, in some of the pics. 🙂 nice tips though.

Thank you so much for such powerful tutorials. Your videos are of great help for me. I have question that, in your main video of D3400 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTneVSxv1qs it was suggested to use shutter speed of 1/60, however in this video you have used shutter speed of 1/200 in many of the shoots. So as i get that more shallow depth of field is achieved at this shutter speed. Am I right ?
