Sony 85mm f1.4 GMII Portrait Photography Review

All photos edited with my Disposable Film Preset Pack:

Hey everyone! I am beyond excited that Sony have finally released the 85mm f1.4 GMII, I have been waiting a long, long time for this. In today’s video I have a lot of example photos to share with you of photos from this lens with the Sony A7IV as well as video autofocus tests so you can see how this lens performs. Let me know if you have anything in particular you want covered in my Sony 85mm f1.4 GM 1 vs GM 2 video or my Sony 85mm f1.4 GMII vs Nikon 85mm f1.2 video… and as always THANK YOU for watching 💛

Thank you to Sony Australia for loaning me this lens early so I can make this review. This video is NOT sponsored, they don’t ask me to say anything, so all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Cant afford this… GM1 has been praised all these years. All of sudden , I am seeing -ve reviews of GM1 when compared to this new version….How marketing works !!!! I really don't understand…

Curious how it performs at 1.4 and infinity, that was something I loved about the 85mm Otus, landscapes at 1.4 look pretty surreal at times

Hi, between this lens and the Sony 55mm 1.2 which one do you prefer for portraits.
    Thank you.

It's good lens, but what's the point, when you can buy Sigma?

I can't decide between this and the 135mm. I have the 50mm 1.2 which is magical.

Which one is better ? 135mm or 85mm ? Personally I really like the 135mm F1.8 from Sony, is majestic.

I was waiting for this lens , but f1.2 instead f1.4 , Honestly Canon and Nikon has f1.2 in crazy level quality.

You have both Gm1 and Gm2 and you didn't do a side by side comparison on bokeh?

Really nice review Julia. Looks like I am ready to replace my Sigma 85mm F1.4 finally. Also wanted to ask how are you taking the video (PIP) while taking shooting too?

i made an account just to comment how much this video pissed me off, you spent half the time talking about nonsense like weight and bokeh, instead of showing us the actual important stuff we care about like flaws, CA, and comparison to the old one, you are always lyinng by saying the old 85 is good, the truth is it’s absolutely garbage, everyone was buying the 85 sigma, that’s how bad the sony version was. Seriously i can’t remember the last time a reviewer made me this angry.

Nice review Julia! Love the bokeh! I've always wanted to upgrade my adapted Canon EF 85mm 1.8 lens to a Sony GM 85mm, and now's the time

some people dont understand that its all about the lens. the camera is just extra features. think about the lens as your food, and the camera as your dressings

I always enjoy watching your reviews, Julia! So excited to get my hands on this lens. I have the 35mm f1.4 GM as my first Sony lens and I've always wanted to get an 85mm f1.4 as my second Sony lens (was initially planning to get the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 and I'm so glad I waited!).

Is it me or was there a lot of eyelash focus with these examples?

How did you record the live view. Great video as always.

This lens it’s a hard sell considering the sigma is even smaller and lighter, while being much cheaper.

My money is on Sony eventually bringing out the 85 1.2 with the quad focus motor like they have with their 50 1.2. They did a reverse release than with the 50, where with that lens they released the 1.2 first, then the 1.4. Hold out a little longer guys, the 1.2 is coming. And she is going to be a gargantuan bokeh beast

It is maybe a great lens but it is also advertisement. I miss where this lens is lacking in. There is no perfect lens.
Lens weight has been reduced? Does it feel more flimsy? Or less balanced?
Remember one thing: The lens lens might be great. However the lens is just a tool. The pictures that you are taking are from you and not from the lens.
The lens lens helps 5% but with shitty lens and good story you always can outperform a good lens.

@JuliaTrotti As promised, I watched your review first. 🙂 Seeing the GM II perform is like falling in love all over again. ❤ I absolutely love 85 1.4, but I had drifted away from using the GM I because the 50 1.2 and 135 1.8 outperform it so heavily in sharpness, focusing speed, and silence. (The last one, I suspect, is why Sony is promoting it as a cine lens too, in addition to as a stills lens.) I still wish Sony had released it as a 1.2 though!

  48. @michaelbell75 Avatar
    @michaelbell75

Nice but the Canon RF 85 f/1.2 is still king IMO. It produces much better colors too, but it could just be the typical Sony green tint from the camera. I notice you really warm them up in post and they look how Canon shots look straight out of the camera. Might as well just switch to Canon and save yourself the time in post 😃 I like your work but shots like the ones at 4:43 and 5:07 really show how much contrast and detail you lose when shooting into strong backlight, especially with nothing to light the models face. That should be in one of your mistakes you are making shooting portraits videos 😉 Id probably take the Sony 50 f/1.2 over this, really like that lens.

I haven't been around in a long while. I'll be honest, as soon as you started using Sony over Canon, your colors took a huge hit.
Great photographer but the way Sony renders color is shit compared to Canon.
