One of my favorite portraits was when I first got my new camera and my buddy and I were talking all about it. I was looking through the viewfinder while talking to him, and he didn't even realize I was trying to take his picture or even had it on.

As someone learning more about both photography and videography, the visuals of this video were absolutely amazing. love the color grading, composition. whole video really just made me happy to look at.
Something that always bugs me. When we're talking about portrait photography, or photography that involves people. Can we all fkng stop saying "Subject"? It feels like people are just accessories to the photo, like they're just a mere thing to be placed on a frame. It rubs be off in the wrong way everytime I hear it being used.
THAT'S NOT S SUBJECT, THAT'S A PERSON! THEY'RE NOT JUST CARDBOARD CUTOUTS, THEY'RE FULLY FLESHED HOOMANS WITH A LIFE, FEELINGS AND GOALS OF THEIR OWN!
I appreciate you man. There's so much out there about the science and theory of these things, but not so much around the art and philosophy of why we do it, and what we're trying to create and capture in these moments. And I agree 100% on the focal length thing too. F mount 50mm 1.8D will always be my fav for this.

Wish this video was released a few days back because I just finished my first portrait session yesterday and wish I would have known some of the tips here for more natural posing.
I never know how to direct people when taking their portraits. I guess that’s why I’m more comfortable in a gig setting. Some good tips here. Going to share this video with a friend who has been doing a lot of this stuff recently.
My boy is 100% right: wide angle lenses are the jam for interesting (!!!) portraits.
I am so sick and tired of pictures taken with a long lens at wide open aperture. This only shows that the photographer is lazy (or incompetent) to create separation other than by heavy "boh-kahhhhhh".
Love how much of this has to do with the rapport and interaction versus the tech. Great as always, Hunter. Nice segue at the end to the flash video. 🙂

my trick, basically for drunk socials… because we all end up in that situation, but 'yknow:
is basically yell "WEIRDER!" at them, like that Adam Driver meme where he's like "MOAR!!" "MOAAAAAAAAAaAR!!" but… obviously, in a way that's so much sillier.
and I've at the very least got funnier photos that way, but also… more honest to their character
I do a lot of street portraits, the best thing you can do is to make someone laugh. If it's a windy day, you might get a good smile when the wind blows hair in their face, and the tip-toes idea here is a good one too. However, if you can improv while setting up a shot, I think that would be the most fun~

The last portrait I did that mattered was… for an employee badge 😅 — still excellent advice! I'm with you on using wide-angle, I found it different but fun to use it doing cosplay snaps at a recent game competition event.
Love what you do! I’m on a mission to zoom out with my portraits, because I feel like the YouTube-style “85mm at f1.4 in natural light” photos really only work for people who are experienced with posing.
(Though I did once work with a small bby for whom I had to use a longer lens, because bby had a keen sense of stranger danger)
These are great ideas for portraits! I have for right now a Kodak H35N and my phone camera as I wait for my DSLR to come back from the US, and your videos have been helping in getting me started in photography as a hobby! I know it's a bit outside of what you usually cover but I hope you cover phone photography when SHTF!
I don't remember where I've seen it but for some official photography for older veterans camera just went on tripod with electronic shutter and remote trigger and people just had a nice conversation about their life and when they asked when the photos will start they got told it's all done.
