When first starting out in photography most peoples goals are to capture solid photos with natural light. That means understanding the exposure triangle, learning composition and just getting a feel for capturing the moment.
As you progress as a photographer you start to look at ways to not rely on just the natural light. You want to shape the light, control the light, move the light and pretty much bring your own. That is why so many photographers quickly gravitate to flash photography. But, when you pick up your first flash or studio strobes you might be a little lost at where to start.
I can tell you I was completely lost when I picked dup my first flash. All I knew was to put it on my camera set to TTL which is auto and take pictures. I didn’t understand the importance of controlling the light, the importance of shooting in manual. So all my flash images looked flat and boring.
About two years ago Adam Lerner and I created an almost one hour long Studio Portrait Flash Photography Photo Shoot at my old loft. The goal was to build a portrait session out starting with just one flash and going from there. We brought out softboxes, light stands, reflectors, triggers, modifiers and more.
We wanted to simply have a fun photo session where we weren’t stopping and turing to the camera every few seconds to teach. I like making videos where we do that but in this case it was more about shooting and seeing how the process was captured.
The questions I am asking during the video are the question that I think many of you out there would have had. It’s great not to have a script and just free flow from photo to photo.
We did this shoot tethered to the computer so we could see the results as soon as the photos transferred to the computer. You will see the images pop up on the screen for a short period of time so my recommendation is to give the video a pause if you want to look at them for longer.

what's in that rectangular box?
I love this style video, the only thing I wish you would change is having the photos linger longer on the screen, especially when youre checking the screen. We dont need to see you looking at the photo and id rather spend more time on the photo itself than seeing y'all look at a computer screen that we cant see
The video is great, the only problem, like someone else also mentioned is the image preview. we see it for 2sec and then while you guys talk about it for bit we are looking at your back and not the image itself, so we can't see the things you talk about 🙁

Hello Jared! ,… I have to say… I like this video is discosting about lights effect in deference angles and ideas of what you can do with light for portraits shooting photography it takes a lot of technicals ideas involve for a photographer there is a lot going on in this video to learn a lot from beside lighting there are types of equipment deference tools to work with an order to take a photo like ( Jared ) said earlier before " start basic with one light and built up from there," weither if this video was 8yrs old or 100yrs it still wart it and you also learn from other peoples too like Jared other friend said you never know everythings and you still learn lot more from other photographers too . now here is my comment this video was very compelling it drives me more in to do more into photography Big Thank You!, Jared, for posting this video… keep it up!. Enjoyable and informative. Great video. Funny thing: I had the impression of Jared being tall; he has a tall look somehow until you have someone else there for scale to show he's on the average side.

Good video. I'd only suggest that since you're shooting so tight, move that soft box even closer. Softer light and less power.

So, are you guys shooting TTL in this shoot, or setting the flashes totally manually? I guess, since you mention the aperture shutter speed, and ISO at times, that you are shooting manually. Is that correct?
