Hello Manny what do you think of the tokina atx-m 85 f1.8 ? ON THE NET THEY SAY IT IS BETTER THAN SONY?

I bought that 55 1.8 with my a6300 quite a few years back. I believe the 55 had just came out. I only heard people say the 50mm 1.8 was “just as good” and the 55 was overpriced due to the blue badge and wasn’t any better. Then it started to gain a lot of attention like 4 years ago. Now it’s like everyone’s favorite lens haha. I always liked it but now that I now a lot more about glass I realize how awesome of a lens it is. That’s why you never listen to people in forums. You have no idea if they even know what they’re talking about. The majority of those people only look at center sharpness and price.

Hi Manny, nice lens comparison. Did you compare the Sony 85 vs the sigma 85? I know you mentioned the Sony is great.

Manny, you’re the man! You’re my favorite YouTuber! Not sure why anybody would be commenting on your luxe, you look great! Not as good as your wife! But you look good, lol. The 55 mm was one of my first Sony lenses also. I’ve actually bought this lens twice. I sold my first copy and regretted it. Then bought it again. Keep up the great work!

55mm Zeiss 1.8 is currently 680 on Amazon, if anyone is interested in it. I’d highly recommend you snatch it now before Sony gets crazy with the prices.

Here in 2022, just got the 55mm and I'm really excited to go out and shoot some street photography with it. I had a 28-70mm paired with the sony 85mm 1.8 but never used the 28-40 range of the zoom so I decided to swap it for the 55. VERY EXCITED!

Picked up 35 1.8 today, and I am very impressed. It is nice, very sharp, and has a very good looking picture. 1.8 is of course not 1.4 but if a grandmother had a wheels… she would be a g-mother)) Btw I am shooting on aps-c. It is also very good for things shooting, because it has close focusing distance and it can create nice blurry background, the only issue is a little LoCA, but really… If you are shooting black trees against the sun at wide open every day you really have a problem 🙂 not the lens, it’s very good. Thanks for recommendation

I’m look at the Rokinon/Sigma AF 35mm 1.4….less than 400 and from the reviews I’ve read is a pretty damn good lens. Thoughts?

The 55mm f1.8 is the lens which convinced me to go with Sony, consequently it was one the first two FE lenses I acquired. It has a beautiful character and I enjoy the colours it renders a great deal.

Just as important for me is the form factor, which is perfect being beautifully compact and lightweight. It is a joy to handle.

I have grown to prefer mechanical manual focus lenses for my much of my photography but the 55mm f1.8 is a lens I wouldn’t part with. When I need autofocus, this lens rarely disappoints.

I have the Sony 50mm/1.8, and it's a decent lens, but it's not super sharp, especially at 1.8. The funny thing is, I kind of like that about it. If I want SHARP I have the 25mm/1.4 GM on the wide end and the Sigma 105/2.8 Macro for longer shots. The softness of the 50mm comes off as character if I set up the shot correctly.

I definitely want to get the 55 1.8. Had the Sony 85 1.8 but sold it to raise some cash to buy a telephoto lens. I totally regret doing so. Have the 50 1.8 and I agree with Manny, it’s “no bueno.”

I have the Sony 35 1.8 (had the Sigma 35 1.4 Art, but sold it because of the weight, incredible lens if you don't mind that aspect), 85 1.8. Zeiss 55 is next on my list, but will wait to see how is the Sigma 50 1.4 Art II. Can tell you that the 2 lenses that I own are the best performance/price.

The 55mm zeiss is nice and gives pictures a unique brightness and very sharp character in natural day light.. Just got this along with Sony 85mm f1.8 for portraits … Both lenses are tact sharp.. The Zeiss is sharper… But the zeiss adds that extra little spice that I was missing in the 55mm range on aps-c format for indoor and outdoor near to mid field backgrounds..The 85mm Sony makes super gorgeous backgrounds on my recent outdoor portraits. No issues with these lenses once I learned how to use them.. Thank for all the great content .. keep it up!!!!

The 55mm f/1.8 is indeed awesome. I even say this as someone who works with a Hasselblad for most of my "serious" work and I would say the Sony mount 55mm is of comparable quality to the Zeiss lenses in the Hasselblad V system. It's a great balance of sharp, pleasing bokeh, and size and it tends to render colors in that hard to describe pleasing Zeiss sort of way . I use a mirrorless camera as a backup and for times when I'm running low on film, and it boggles my mind how huge some of the lenses are. Totally defeats the purpose for me. Would I like it if the lens was f/1.4? Sure… But honestly f/1.8 is just fine in most cases and far faster than the f/2.8 wide limit you tend to find in medium format anyway.
