Imo the "holy trinity of lenses" the 15 – 35, 25 – 70 and 70 to 200 lense range is amazing, but I reckon the holy trinity or prime leses is the 35mm, 50mm and the 85mm. These are the 6 lenses I have for my kit. My only difference is the 25 to 70 is a 25 to 100 f4 as I'm not a pro photographer and can't justify the cost of the more expensive 25 to 70s in the Canon range.
I just need to add a 16mm, a 24mm and a 100mm macro prime lense to really round out my kit nicely for what I do. That being said I have been shooting a lot with my 85mm lense at the moment and loving it.
This was my first lens and honestly I think it's more useful than my 24-70 (for my workflow and style). Only betttter might be my 135mm now
Was this video shot on 85mm? I freaking love my Sony fe 85mm f/1.8. It’s changed how I take photos and how I view the world around me. Also great with macro extensions on it 👍🏻

I started photography last year as an hobby and quickly became an addiction lol.
I end up getting a Panasonic S5 ll and 3 prime lenses, 18mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8 and the 85mm f1.8.
I believe that this 3 lenses are the best combination in my opinion.
18mm for the situation’s when I want to get more of the subject into the frame, 35 when I am shooting in close spaces and I need to have a wider feel of view and 85 for everyday and everything lol.

I heard that the 85mm is adding kilos to your face and dont make you skinny, so exactly the opposite. So you have to stand right to take good photos with this lens.

I think the worst advice to give to a new photographer is to say buy 1 or all of the telephoto "holy trinity" lenses…. what a joke…. why would you get somethink that will not require you to ever move, think differently or creatively about the photo you take? Just stand there and the lens makes composition a mute point… To anyone here who things the above, I hope you consider rethinking it, and telling those newbie photographers to buy a prime and learn to use their heart, mind and FEET to compose that new Prime lens….
I think 135mm f1.8 GM is the sharpest lens among others, but it little bit heavier than the others
85mm, you know it's going to be used wide opened, so pointless stuff…
I just discovered this very interesting video. Thank you for sharing. It is intriguing really to think of this focal lens being so special in different ways. I was particularly amazed to know that it is one of the sharpest, which is a super important quality to me… which brings me to this question: wouldn't the use of f1.4 counter-balance this accrued sharpness, knowing that a lens is sharpest around f/8 or 11 and softer in the extreme aperture such as 1.4? I would appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

PERFECT. 85mm is the one and only
Until I got an 85(XF56mm f1.2), I wouldn't have thought one could be glued to my camera. But, that is exactly what happened when I started using it. Love it. Also, have been using a 135mm(XF90mm f2) a lot. Love it's sharpness. I got both for doing portraits, but have used them for everything.

I’m finding I Ike shooting at70 on my zoom lens, so 85 will be my next lens purchase. New to full frame. I miss the AOSC crop strangely
love the Sigma 35 1.4 Art and the Sony 85 1.8 for my street photography and portraits and both are lightweight enough to carry around and work with them all day long while my 85mm 1.4 GM stayed at home mostly and I did not see the point to keep it so I sold it. The best camera and lens is the one you've got with you. And the difference between the 1.8 Sony 85 mm and the 1.4 Sony GM is not that huge from my perspective. I thought about the Sigma too because I love the 35mm 1.4 Sigma Art but the 85 mm 1.4 I did not fancy so I keep the Sony 1.8 for now and mostly it does it's job!
I love my 85mm lens more then any of my other lenses.

Agree to disagree. For mine, the human encounters, expressions and interactions that the 24-50mm range foster is half of the magic of street. 85mm is a pretty standoffish focal length for uncontrolled subjects in environmental portrait and also too short to snipe with.

Hay Pat, you are so great at teaching and explaining cameras, lenses, and etc.; that's why I like your presentations. On thing though, please, please do not get trapped in having to swear to make a point, you are doing great without swearing. You do not swear very much that's why I am saying this so you won't continue. It is so pleasant to hear a presentation without having to swear to make a point; you do great without it.

Just one comment. Compression si not about the narrow field of view. Is about the distance from the camera to the subject. A telephoto lens requires you to be further away and that distance is what we see as compression in the final pictures.

I am a serious procrastinator, and can talk myself out of anything, have been "going to buy" a prime since the day I purchased my camera, always talking myself out as I could always find different info on different lengths. After watching this video I packed my stuff, left the house, and bought my 85mm.

I personally love my konica hexanon 57mm f1.4 on aps-c; coming to about 91mm. It's probably my favorite lens. So much character and for the type of photography I like to do, it works on every level. I highly recommend you try this lens.
Just got my Rokinon 85 mm. can't wait to get it out and shoot. One reason I got was the aspect of it helping to narrow the landscape aspect, forcing me to look harder for the subject of the shot. Thank you sir for the video.
