The distortion of the features has more to do with distance from the subject rather than actual focal length of the lens. a 50 image taken at 85 range and cropped in a little has the same facial features. also that being said. not all race face type benefit to have their face squished.
Asian faces for example who have wider faces and smaller noses actually look better in 35 50 portrait distance as it slims their face and accentuate their nose. If you throw on an 85 or 135 they start looking like jack ma. Europeans are the opposite due to narrow face and bigger nose

I think this is the right way to get photographers thinking about what type of lens will fit the business and style. I am reading a book on story telling in animation and storyboarding. Composition fuels the type of photo you are trying to take. I feel like there will be never one single answer. But *85 is very flattering 135 is cool 50 on close up do have a bit of bowing. I have used different lens profile in LR to see what would happen to the photos…
Nice! Thanks. For some reason I like your 50mm portrait the best. This is ironic because even though I have multiple 50mm lenses, this focal length is my least favorite.
I am trying to keep the 50mm on my camera for a couple of weeks to make decision wheather I keep it or not.
My favorite portrait lens is 85mm with the 35mm for a full body image. I used the 35mm 1.4 GM exclusively on a trip to Venice and it produced some amazing portraits (Sorry about your experience, I knew of Italy’s reputation, so kept my equipment close and used my laptop only in hotels).
The lens that really wowed me is the SAL 135mm 1.8 adapted to my Sony A7RIII. Its optical imperfect, but the images it produced were quite astonishing.
I took a few portraits of my beloved dog with this lens who has since passed away and it captured her soul perfectly. Even though I don’t use this lens as much, I keep it I’m memory of her.
How about for crop sensor?
Sony 135 f1.8 can have full body broken, while Sony 85 F1.4 cannot.
I find myself using the 85mm for portrait shots, and sometimes the 70-200mm for the compression

If they are white use any lens but with lower flash power. If they have dark skin use 100mm or up with any flash power because dark skin absorbs light best

I use what I got. I don't have a 85 mm for canon. I've taken a thousand portraits with 50 mm and I've never heard any complaints. Sometimes I get really close. I also shoot portraits with a 35 after aeeing some artistic portraits that looked absolutely wonderful with the distortion. The flat look gets very boring and I tend not to shoot directly straight on the subject. One thing that I love about this video is that Manny is freaking amazing and my style is very different. It just reminds me you can have your own space when it comes to shooting style.
Good video nonetheless. If it wasn't for Manny I wouldn't have watched it because we've seen this a million times.
from 35 to 85. I hate portraits taken way too far from the person. make no sense to use 105 135 or 200. flat face. big ears. and no way to interact with the person. I hate distance

Hey Manny because I don't have as many options as yourself. My choice is my 50mm or 70-200mm for portrait. Now I have rented a 85mm. At this time my lens are 14-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 70-200mm
My favorite so far is the 85mm
But I do want the 135mm can I rent yours lol since it's collecting dust 😭
