In two of the shots, the model is closer to the camera with the RF than with the DS version. That could explain the extra blur. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense that the blur of the DS is so much less. The blur disks should be about the same, since determined by aperture and focal length. It doesn't fit to other reviews I saw. Is maybe the aperture stuck here at f1.4?
You can shoot the same photo with a way cheaper lens and get same results. My opinion.
Proof pudding eating. So I’ll see as my second hand DS (€1900 @MPB) will arrive one of these days. But I think you are right & I’ll have to send it back. It’s just because this was available second hand for such a low price ‘like new’, that I ordered that DS. I have the money but I just won’t spend an amount of €3000, even for the RF 85mm F1.2. If it’s going back I’ll opt for an occasion EF 85mm F1.2L II and not the EF 85mm F1.4L IS that although it’s image quality is far better, the dreamy magic of the 1.2 has gone. It’s some sort of comparable decision: the power of imperfection!

The lights were football shaped with the regular lens versus the nice rounded shapes with the DS. I feel this is the main difference. I hate football shapes so the DS is for me.

This was a weird test. From all i’ve seen, the DS has some of the most dreamy and most character full backgrounds of all lenses in the world right now.

RF85mm 1.2L all day long. For me the background blur (bokeh) and the better light are the points! so there is no need to get the DS-Version…
Canon needs to make another 85mm 1.2 that has the coating without light loss or they need to put a control ring like they did on RF macro 100 to select the amount of defocus smoothing… i feel like i want both versions of this lens and because of that i am not getting either and going with a 50 1.2 instead. Its dumb for Canon to make you choose between DS and regular… you'll probably see a 85mm Mk II with the control ring in the future so I'll wait or use my 70-200 which makes awesome images too.
The best used of DS need your background to be closer to your subject aprox 5’ to 10’ away and you will spot the diff swirling bokeh imo

Is the difference in the lenses more so with skin texture vs background blur? Some lenses are so sharp, it makes skin detail too sharp and unflattering.
In the UK right now the non-DS version is the equivalent of $3,297.80, DS version is the equivalent of $4,221.19.
Crazy.
I did order the DS at first but returned it and got the non DS and glad I did, the bokeh effect of the DS looks fake to me and if you use LR with background detection on the non-DS it even look more dreamy.
At 7:00 the focus at RF is more in the front thand at the DS. You should know that, boy.
So basically the DS is a waste of money and marketing hype? The Canon official marketing materials suggests that the RF 85mm WITHOUT "DS" will give defocussed / bokeh lights a very hard crisp edge. This video proves that's not the case, as the non-DF version produced very soft background light.

I feel as though you can achieve the DS with an $80 Black Pro-Mist filter to truly blow out those highlights and bloom it just like the DS version. Am I crazy?!

Great Review. My favorite after watching MANY. Price point is so high that another $300 is not the issue and often think, more expensive is better. But in this case, I don't like the texture that is lost in the background. The DS feels a little to artificial for my liking. Great review.
The Canon colors are so awful, I can't get past them. Great video, but I'll wait for the Nikon version of the 85 1.2

the Gaussian Blur effect you're talking about is right on point, it's what the DS lens (or minolta/sony STF lens) is all about. your eyes see bokeh the same way as these lenses do and it is by all means a more natural way of rendering out of focus objects. if you have a really busy background like in a field of flowers or grass or other vegetation, you'll most likely enjoy the DS rendering more =)
also, undeclared by cannon, the DS elements steal light and would put the lens at an F-stop value at around 2.4. to get a proper comparison of the bokeh, you'd have to stop the RF lens down to 2.4 and compare.
i think the cannon cameras boost the ISO performance to negate the light loss for same shutter speed settings at given F-stops like 1.2 etc. images should be alot darker at the same settings due to the DS elements light loss.

The 85mm F1.2 Defocus appears to have superior micro contrast and 3D pop. However, the difference in micro contrast maybe due to the different exposures with both lenses being used.
By the way, as usual awesome job on the photo shoot.
I personally like the DS better. Yes the bokeh is amazing on the reg RF, but its really pronounced. Whereas the DS bokeh is smoother and less intrusive, not distracting the viewer with bold bokeh balls.
