When I shoot photographs I rather take shots from far away. Usually people are walking forward, or standing around. Not a close up of anyone. That's how I shot photographs in New York City. I love lanscapes where people are just walking around. I liked high rise buildings as well.
Any suggestions for managing language barriers. I am not clearly understandable in the native language of where I live.

Im from Germany. It's difficult to make pictures because it's not allowed to take photos from strangers without there Permission. What can I do when the people are far away or go away before asking? When I got a good photo idea but can't take it before I ask them for permission.
The only thing i would add is always offer to send them a copy of what you've taken, even if you don't think they are anything special, the stranger has given you their time, why not give a little something back?
Great video, but I was thinking what might be even more helpful, instead of "simulating" the initial introduction, to actually have the camera taking a video and recording sound while you approach and ask the subject if you can take their photo, so we can see the actual interaction. of course, if they decline, you wouldn't use that video, but for the people who agree it would be great. the camera can just be in your hand .. no need to look directly at the person's face. Either way, nice video, thanks!
I must admit you have some way of making me interested in things I usually dismissed. Like with the flash I used to think "nah, I don't like flash photography" to "wow, I need get a flash to try it out". And the same case happened here. Before the video : "Nah, I'm not that into portraits" After the video: "Omg, I need to go out now"

I usually shoot street and candids. I feel so annoyed by the tiktok street portraits stuff that I really avoid it, always feels like "men use photography to pick up women" which I don't like. The irony is that I often do past people (usually women) who kind of give a look of "please ask to take my picture" that i block out while I'm in "Saul Leiter" mode. Maybe this is my sign to stop being so cold in my Street snapping mentality & give it a try…
My photo class is doing portraits in a few weeks and the prof is having me stand up for a few minutes to give people a quick rundown on how to approach people for street, and I'll be sure to mention this video as supplemental material since it's so close to how I roll (I'm at uni at the moment so I usually chip in that I'm taking pictures for a class or for the photo club too) I've gotten some really great shots doing it!
7:51 I mean at the end of the day I also want to make a good photo too lol. Otherwise you might as well throw away your gear cause there is no difference from a random person on their iphone. Technique DOES matter cause behind technique is intention. And intention is how you tell a story with your photo, express an emotion, etc.

I've tried street portraits before, I like to start by asking them 'hey, you got a moment?' they get interested and you just say you're practicing portraits and that they look cool, for me it's the easiest way TBH.
