Three Ways to Light a Corner Portrait: Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Three Ways to Light a Corner Portrait: Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Corners are the perfect place to shoot portraits and compared to a flat wall they have a number of hidden advantages. From a models point of view, a corner opens up extra posing options. For the viewer a corner adds a feeling of 3D to our two dimensional medium. And photographers get the opportunity to play with light bouncing off two surfaces at once.

In this video Gavin Hoey will show you how to set up three simple lighting styles that maximise the usefulness of a corner. Working in his small home studio, Gavin creates soft light, hard light and symmetrical lighting with just one flash. All he needs is a Octobox, Strip Box, a grid and an empty corner to work in.

Must admit Gavin, I love your teaching style. Straight to the point, no flapping around, and easy to understand and a model that didn't need any direction.
    Can I ask three questions.
    1. What's the chances of you doing a tutorial on how your setup to record these youtube videos, camera, audio, video editing software etc…
    2. You used a 10 degree grid on the light. Now I see grids advertised on places like Amazon but I personally have not seen them advertised

in varying degrees like 10, 20 30 etc.

    3. GELS. I have them and I've tried using them but I never get the vibrant gel colors or indeed even a wide spread over a background. So what's the secret..?

Terrific shoot! Can you give us a BTS tour of your studio, the working space including dimensions? Is this a separate building? Heated and air conditioned? And, space for where you prep the models for hair and makeup? For those of us who have limited space, including me, this would be helpful!

Great video Gavin, some amazing shots of Sophie as well. I love dark edgy shots like that. The last lighting set up I would have done a close up of her face with the beam of light shining on her. She has such amazing eyes.

The return in the corner could be a very large mirror 6' x 6' on wheels (covered or not with fabric) which I have anyway 🙂 Two lessons in one lateral thunking & lighting-disaplines 🙂

Great and inspiring video as usual! I have a question. What is the corner background made of? Is it permanent or changeable?
