How many of you have ever gone to an Air Show? I personally had never been to an Air Show before Stephen set up a few photo passes to shoot “Thunder” over the boardwalk this summer in Atlantic City.
Any time I go into a situation where I am shooting something I have never shot before I like to do as much research as possible. In this case I have a longtime friend Matt Ciao who grew up shooting fighter jets and air shows.
I asked him to give me his Top Tips for shooting photos at an air show. One of the main tips is don’t freeze the props. What he said is when you are shooting air planes one of the biggest mistakes is freezing the propellers. I would have thought I set my shutter speed high and just let it rip and freeze the action. It’s a good thing I spoke to Matt before hand to get a better understand about what I should be looking to capture.

youre a fraud, how are you gonna allow yourself to "give tips" on this subject when youve never done it and were ill prepared, and half of your shots were blurry, the only reason your video was informing is cause now i know what not to do, be you
I know this an old video, but I'm going to my first airshow this weekend and this video helped tremendously. Will definitely ask for help while I'm there. Hopefully I get some good keepers!

You need the full Wimberley gimbal. Ditch the monopod.
What focus tracking would work better, d9 or group or 3d..

Great jobb on your first airshow. Late comment but I just discovered your video. Something I learned early on was to track the planes far away as well since they usually repeat their patterns. Start tracking them far off and the closer they get you start shooting and when they are as close as they get just hold the button down or do burst if you have a small buffer. Jared, did you turn off VR on monopod?

Jared, one thin you didn't mention is top aperture to use. You mentioned shooting at higher aperture but I'd ask you to do a bit of research on this. Phase Detection AF points which is the AF system for fast action top out at f8, least in mirrorless cameras. Shooting above f8 may mean you're relying on the slower Contrast Section AF system of your camera. I'm guessing PDAF has the same limitations in DSLRs. I agree with others who recommend ditching the monopod.
