I recently purchased a used Yongnuo 85mm F1.8 as a portrait lens for my Canon 5D full frame. I thought it would be great to share why I love 85mm focal length for general portrait shooting. When I am shooting with my Micro Four Thirds setup, the Olympus 45mm F1.8 is my favourite for portraits, which is very close to 85mm equivalent.

Hi Robin, love your channel and passion. Quick question – would the Olympus 40-150 pro f4 be ok for portraits? I hear it’s sharp etc, and I will have it soon. But would I be better getting the 45 mm as well? Don’t want to spend the money if the 40-150 can do the job. Thank you, apologises if you have answered this question already. 👍

I love the fact that you buy so many used lenses! I to think that more people should buy used gear. I have always felt that if something is new I am afraid to use it because when I put the first nick or scratch in it I feel so bad. But when it is used gear it has already been beat up and I can concentrate on my photography more.
Yes I use the 85mm (45mm) a lot. It is a very useful lens. I only reach for the 75mm F1.8 when I am doing closer head shot work.
About background compression. If you step forward with a, let’s say, 50 mm lens, don’t you get the same amount of background?

Robin, for a crop sensor camera do u recommend more 50mm 1.8 rather than 35mm 1.8 for portrait shooting?

Great results with the old camera and inexpensive lens. Well done. I still love the old DSLR's–I rented a Nikon D810 so I could help a friend out that was having some difficulties with his and thoroughly enjoyed using the old camera and two prime lenses for a week. Good job, Robin.

How many on YouTube kindly teach why we should like 85mm and the key of photography ? 3 ? 4 ? , So here my question: Why a 5th?
I have been in this game for a long time. What I have learnt is that unless someone else is footing the bill, then for 95% of pro work lenses which are considered ' amateur ' will suffice. The urge to carry and show off large, heavy and expensive lenses which are the norm today, and these are getting bigger and more expensive by the day, is just to convince others that the photographer is worth the money he is asking. During many decades I have amassed a lot of equipment, but these days I just look for the lightest, most portable gear that can do the job. I don't particulary care if a good photograph was shot with a 16 MP camera or one these 100 MP monsters of today or better still on film. As ansel Adams put is aptly " there is nothing more offensive than a sharp photograph of a fuzzy concept ".

Hey Robin, I shoot on Olympus, but I recently got sigma 18-55 mm f2.8 e mount, and I am looking for an adapter to enable me to mount the lens to my Olympus camera

For a very cheap lens you show us, we can achieve some stunning results with the Yongnuo. Great photographer, great model and great images. I was fascinated by the delicate positioning of Wendy's hands. Clearly I need to use my Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM much more. Thanks Robin.
